For my Bat Mitzvah project, I am volunteering, participating, and donating money to the Breathing Room Foundation. Established in February of 1997, The Breathing Room’s mission is to provide care and support to families affected by cancer. They recognize that a cancer diagnosis affects every aspect of a family’s life; emotional, physical, spiritual and financial. Theystrive to provide a family with whatever it is that will allow them a bit of “breathing room” from their daily struggle against cancer. The hope is that this will allow them to concentrate alltheir efforts towards regaining their physical health.
I like the idea that if the person is too tired to work or go out and shop (for food, school supplies, or any simple daily thing) due to treatment, Breathing Room helps give patients and their families a little “breathing room.” Depending upon need, clients receive support in one or more areas: grocery/necessity items (prepared meals, grocery items, gift cards), medical needs (nutritional supplements, equipment/ medical supplies, medical co-pays/prescriptions), transportation to treatment, utility bills, clothing and wigs, rent/mortgage, appliances/furniture and home repairs.
I love to cook. I will be cooking meals and delivering them to some local families connected with the foundation. And on October 1st my family and I are participating in a 5k/2 mile walk for to benefit The Breathing Room. My family is actually training to run the 5K!!! We would LOVE for you to join us. See the attached flyer for more details.
I chose to help people with cancer because a few years ago my Grammy was diagnosed with breast cancer (she is in remission!!!) and I wanted to be able to help other people like her. I know that she appreciated even a small thoughtful thing when she wasn’t feeling good.
It is only through kindness and compassionate people that the Breathing Room Foundation impact so many families battling cancer. If you can’t be there on October 1, please consider making a donation by selecting the donation option on the Valley Road Run signup form !!!
Love, Maya
